How to Make Hands-Free Calls with Live Captions on MemoMind One
Say the word, and Memo AI makes the call. While you talk, whatever the other person says streams in as text — right there in your line of sight.
This one actually started with a tester. Back in May, someone put on MemoMind One for the first time and asked something pretty basic: can I just voice-call people straight from my contacts? At the time, the honest answer was no. Now it is. Chalk it up as another "You Ask, We Ship" win — our Discord thread where testers tell us what's missing, and we go build it.
How to Set Up a Hands-Free Call
Follow these steps to make your first voice call:
Step 1: Grant contacts access.
Open the MemoMind app and go to Settings. Find the Contacts permission and enable it. Without it, Memo can't match a name to a phone number. This takes ten seconds, and you only do it once.
Step 2: Wake the assistant and say who to call.
Say "Hi Memo" to wake the assistant. The display shows "I'm listening, please speak." Then say: "Make a phone call to [Name]." Your words appear on screen as you speak them, so you can confirm it heard the right name before anything happens.
Step 3: Connect or Cancel the Call.
The display switches to "Calling…" while it dials. Changed your mind? Double-click the temple to cancel — no fumbling for a red button you can't see.
Step 4: Talk, and read along.
Once connected, you see the contact's name, an in-call timer, and live captions of the other person's speech streaming above the timer. The audio plays through the glasses' open-ear speakers, so you hear it naturally without blocking your ears. And if you're in a place where you can't listen — or can't hear — the captions keep you in the conversation.
How to Control a Call from Your Glasses
Everything stays on your temple, hinted right on the display:

Tap once — hide or show captions. Useful when you don't need them for a moment, or when you want to focus on the caller's name and timer.

Double-click — hang up. Ends the call and returns you to the dashboard.

Long press — start recording the call. The recording saves to your Recorder history with a full transcript and AI Summary — useful for client calls, interviews, or any conversation you want to reference later. Always follow local recording laws and inform the other party when required.
When the call ends, you see "Call ended" briefly, then you're back to your dashboard. The phone doesn't leave your pocket.
How Live In-Call Captions Work
The captions run on the same engine as our standalone Captions feature, but they're optimized for the cadence of a phone call — shorter sentences, faster turnover, and the ability to hide them with a single tap when you don't need them.
Two things make this different from a regular Bluetooth call:

You never touch your phone. Wake the assistant, say who to call, and the glasses handle the rest.

You can read the call. Live captions appear above the call timer, line by line, as the other person speaks. This isn't a transcript you get afterward — it's simultaneous text while the conversation is happening.
Note that captions are one-directional during calls — you see the other person's speech as text. Your own speech isn't captioned back to you (you know what you said).
Where This Changes Everything

When it's loud. A busy street, a café, a train platform. You can't hear them over the noise, but you can read them. The captions keep the conversation going even when your ears can't pick out the words.

When it needs to be quiet. A library, a shared office, a sleeping baby in the next room. Keep the volume low or muted, and let your eyes do the listening. You can respond by voice at a normal volume — the glasses' mic picks you up — while reading the other person's side.

When you're learning a language. Hearing a language you're still learning? Read the captions to catch words you missed aurally. The captions are real-time, so you don't fall behind.

Can MemoMind One make phone calls without my phone?
Yes. Once Contacts access is enabled in the MemoMind app, you can use a voice command to call someone from your contacts without taking your phone out.
Can I see live captions during a phone call?
Yes. During a call, MemoMind One displays live captions of the other person's speech above the call timer.
Can MemoMind One caption both sides of a phone conversation?
No. In-call captions currently show the other person's speech. If you need a full transcript of both sides, use the call recording feature.
Do I need to take out my phone to make a call?
No. After Contacts access is enabled, you can wake Memo AI and use a voice command to call someone from your contacts.
